Living 'n Marietta
With a population of about 67,000, Marietta is considered one of Georgia’s best-managed cities, and has garnered national recognition for offering a high quality of life for its residents. The city is located about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta, and is the county seat of Cobb County. Originally settled as a railroad hub in the 1800s, the city has enjoyed long periods of growth over the decades, and it has benefitted from its proximity to Atlanta. While Marietta residents can gain easy access to the big city by hopping on Interstate 285, there is plenty to do in this bedroom community, and it’s become a city of choice for thousands of the metro area’s families.
Marietta’s mild winters (lows only occasionally get below freezing) make it an attractive place for outdoor activities. Summers can be hot, and residents can cool off at the Sewell Park Pool, operated by the Cobb County government, or hit the rink at the Marietta Ice Center.
Children living within Marietta’s city limits attend Marietta City Schools, an award-wining charter school system offering a choice of schools that focus on different areas of academics, including STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and International Baccalaureate. The Marietta school system is the only city system operating separately from the Cobb County school system.
